WhiteGrass Delivers, 2-24-07 : Workin' it 9-5 at WhiteGrass. Hit the Frontside and found allll the little nooks & crannies that I could remember, handful of first track freshies and plenty of 3rd-4th in shots, still left plenty of fluffiness though. Pictures are a combo of Dave's camera and mine, he took most of the tourist gaper 'pretty' pictures. It was a fun day with an interesting finish.

Tahoe '06, Day 6, Squaw Valley : OK, so this day was beyond all expectations. Final day of the trip, looking at the weather, we went back to Squaw figuring the Hi-T at Alpine would still be closed because of the continual storminess. The mtn was reporting around a foot or so at upper elevations.....they were wrong, thigh to waist deep, 5% super light pow. First run off the Siberia Express chair produced choking face shots and total submersion. It was gonna be a big day! Skiing was too good to mess with action shots, there was sooooo much light and deep pow to Schralp. Majority of the day was spent off the Shirley Lake and Granite Chief chairs, with some Broken Arrow and KT-22 laps tossed in for good measure. What a way to finish the trip.....

Tahoe '06, Day 5, Squaw Valley : Day five, the trip is winding down, or up, depending on perspective. First we checked out Alpine Meadows, hoping to get out the Hi-T for some big laps. But the storm was pumping, the winds were blowing, so we swung it over to Squaw Valley figuring that their lifts would be spinning in their more shelterred nooks. My first day at Squaw and this place is f-in HUGE! Hit up the Funitel, then Shirley Lake to Granite Chief to start the day. Fun laps over there before hitting the gates into the Silverado Chair drainage. A lot of fun lines were had over there before hiking up to Broken Arrow and finishing the day on KT-22, hooking up with Erin again in the afternoon. Fun on the steeps off KT-22 and skied fresh pow refills until the chairs stopped spinning.

Tahoe '06, Day 4, Hidden Peak. : So, after killing it for three days, the weather broke and we opted for a backcountry tour. A nice easy pace was called for as we tackled Hidden Peak, situated between Jake's and Rubicon. The multiple day storm left plenty of snow in the hills and we went for a late morning start, figuring that the skintrack would be set by the time we got there. Hooked up with Stubbie's old housemate Nikki on her split-board, so it was cornucopia of bc travellers, Nikki on her board, Stubbie on rando and me on tele. We were also joined by the hounds Lakota and Louie, they like to schralp the pow just as much as we do, lots of fun to bring the dogs along. Conditions were again phenominal, knee to thigh deep, light and dry pow until the very bottom of the run where the sun had cooked things just a bit.

Tahoe '06, Day 3, Alpine Meadows : So, after the big tour on Sunday, Gregg and I opted for an 'easy' day at Homewood Resort on Monday. Didn't take any pictures there, another stormy day and the skiing was too much fun to futz with the camera. The low key day served us well as we hit Alpine Meadows for our third storm day in a row. Hooked it up with local rippers Tyler and Dan for a tour of the mtn. I was shown some sweet stashes out beyond the ropes as well as some local spots, like the always fun Lower Bakery. Conditions were awesome again, first true face shots were had, the snow just kept coming....

Tahoe '06, Days 0 & 1, Travel-Stanford Rock : Whoo doggy, this was a big day. We planned a shuttle ski of Stanford rock, beginning in the Ward Creek area and then finishing with a ski down towards the dropped car in the West Lake area. The day started great, then we got pinched by Ward Creek, unable to find a decent crossing. We opted for a sketchy little tree to keep the pucker factor high, Erin did an awesome job establishing the line and digging steps into the opposite bank to get out. Two hours in before we actually began the 'real' climb. Storm rolled in during our first descent and socked us pretty good for the climb to Stanford Rock proper. Big props to Stubbie and Erin for their route finding skillz and breaking trail for this lowland eastcoaster, would have been a much longer day had I been on point. Some sweet turns were had on the last descent, knee to thigh deep freshness, which finished with some fun singletrackish low angle traversing to the car. Long day at a bit over 8 hours from start to finish, kinda set the tone for the rest of the trip.

WhiteGrass Storm Day 2-11-06 : Yeah, another great day at WhiteGrass, WV. Hit the road early as usual, drove into the snow at about 2000' crossing Walkers Ridge at 7:15ish in the AM and it puked pretty much all day. Had some camera issues with the cold and constant snow, so not too many shots from me. But, buddy Eric has some great pics on his page at http://ericfanderson.smugmug.com/gallery/1201027
Was a nice 8hr tour, climb from lodge straight to Bald. Turns on thin cover down Baldy Steeps, then Springers whole way down to the hut. Back up to Bald and out to Weiss, off the south side for some turns then off to explore the trees of Birches Garden for two laps and a broken pole for Marty. Nice repair with a stick and tape then over to CanaanValley for a poach of the still closed (??????) Gravity Drop. Snuck a freebie lift ride then poached a second run right back down the sweet pow under the chair. Then it was time to climb back up to Upper Springer for more blown in driftline fun, quick traverse over to Roundtop for an afternoon snack before tackling the descent off the face of Bald Knob proper. First time I've skied from the top in 4yrs, then back to Roundtop for the glory run to the lodge, picking off a little line in Anita's chutes. Dammmmmmmn what a day, 5 hour drive home and then 10" of fresh at the majestic home mountain of Ski Roundtop on Sunday morn. Can I get a whoot whoot!

Ya gotta play to win. WhiteGrass,, 1-7-06 : Rolled the dice, hoping for good conditions. Nobody else wanted to play this wknd so it was another solo travel day. Spent the day using skins on the old World Pistes, chasing vertical, looking for turns. Earlybird special had me able to make first tracks down the Baldy Steeps, also made a run down the face of Baldy, not quite from the tippy top, the entire way down to the Springer Shelter. Hiked back up and out to the Nat'l Nordic, which was getting bumped out with all the peeps up there, I counted 9 others on top. So, quickly yo-yoed the pipeline shots then made a run down Canaan Valley and hiked back up to Bald for a final run down thru the Breakfast Bowl and the main slope. Another fine way to spend 7 hours tromping around on skis.

Enjoying the View. WhiteGrass, WV 12-17-05 : Wow, what a beautiful day in the mtns of WV. The snow was incredible and after getting semi-lost in the Dolly Sods, I found some insane pockets of snow. Stumbled into these hidden rooms amongst the spruce, unreal. Got in plenty of freshy fresh lines throught the trees; Baldy Steeps, laps through the Breakfast Bowl, Sawmill, Cathedral and too much fun in Anita's steep gully...yeeee haaaaa!

WhiteGrass, 12-10-05 : Well, wasn't really in a picture taking mood, so not a whole lot from the day's adventure. Nice sunrise from the top of the hill on the way to Mt Storm. Saw tracks from a big kitty cat, guessing a bobcat, print was about the size of my closed fist. Then we spooked a flock of turkeys while poaching a run at Canaan. The find of the day was the fresh set of bear tracks we bumped into on the way to the Nat'l Nordic, Marty got pics over at gunner.smugmug.com

Turns are where you find them; WhiteGrass 12-3-05 : Oh boy, so it's Jack Frost wknd. I can't swing the overnighter with Huxley the dog, but, there is freshyfresh snow just lying around waiting. So, it's a quick daytrip for some skiing sans party. Last minute emails seal the deal and I'm meeting Martee'n at 8:30-9am, WhiteGrass lodge. On the road at 5am, getting used to this ritual, and on skis at 9am. Sweet, we're the first ones out. We head over to Springer for some turns in that blown in swale. Niiice driftline in there. Skied more driftline up along Springer then headed up to the Baldy Grove. We're shocked to be the first visitors for the day and grab some nice photo ops along with a peaceful quiet lunch amongst the trees. Out to the Baldy overlook, we spot our goal.....poaching the upper portion of CV. ManMade guns still aren't blowing and once again, the wind left a sweet line of blown in pow. Snow was a bit thin, about as thin as you'd want to ski it, but still a load of fun. We put in a couple of laps on Gravity Drop and some short yoyos on another headwall before making the connection back to Springers. The Weather changed a bit while at CV and we found really good snow once back in lower Springers, the drop in temp/lack of sun may have lightenned it up. Capped off the 6 hour tour with a glory run down the main slope to the lodge at WhiteGrass. It was skeeeeetchysketchy thin and boney for sure. But we survived, so it's all good. Just in time for Chicken noodle soup from the cafe and was on the road home before sundown. Marti should have the complimentary set of prints up over gunner.smugmug.com.

WhiteGrass 11-26-05 : Pictures from the first ski day of the new season. On the road early to WV, skied a couple hours, then a hot lunch and back out for a few more hour tour. Unbelievable untracked November powder all over, run of the day was a freshy fluff poach over at Canaan Valley on the 'unopened' upper tract of the mtn, sweetness. Stellar sunset leaving Canaan and wrapped it up with a chill game of Jenga.
